The Surge is an action adventure game from studio Deck13 Interactive, the studio who previous had a similar styled gameLords of the Fallen. This latest title has a very different setting from the previous outing, where players are not fighting mythological beasts in a fantasy setting, instead fighting man made constructions in a futuristic setting.
I've been posting and following Focus Home Interactive and Deck13's The Surge for a while now. The first E3 impressions, if I remember rightly, showed a world and combat inspired by mechanics of Dark Souls. With the release of Zero Dawn on PS4 I see some similarities in the setting now but the recent CGI trailer offers a few hints on the upcoming title aimed for launch on May 16th.
In the spirit of live action/CGI trailers, Deck 13 released a trailer called "Bad day at the Office" for the upcoming RPG The Surge. The trailer shows us a little backstory of the company and the main character gaining his exosuit, as well as a few flashy scenes of the main character battling some robotic baddies.
The Other 99 is a title that may have escaped your attention, but it's an interesting prospect if nothing else. Developed by Cornwall based indie team Burning Arrow, and published by Deck 13 (Lords of the Fallen and The Surge), The Other 99 seems like an intense Battle Royale experience that sees players fighting off the 99 other NPCs on an island in first person.
In The Other 99, players find themselves on an island with nothing but a note which reads, “the only way off the island is through the other 99.” Each enemy NPC is just as desperate to survive as you, and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal.... The game features brutal visceral combat, story driven exploration and stealth elements.
Developer Deck13 revealed their new title, The Surge, an action RPG coming to Xbox One, PC and Playstation 4. Its likely that The Surge will utilize the new Microsoft 'buy once and play anywhere' on either Xbox One or PC. The Surge looks to be a sci-fi twist on Dark Souls games with both games sharing similar controls, viewpoints and UI. It is reminiscent of Lords of the Fallen but The Surge has looked to create a more futuristic dystopian setting where weapons are not high tech weapons but machinery items. The main character and most human enemies are wearing some form of exo-suit with attachments that turn a simple heavy lifting exo-suit into one man killing machine.
There are a few gameplay videos out there that show off and interesting combat mechanic when the player locks on to an opponent and can target individual limbs or parts of a body. The Surge rewards players depending on their level of skill. If a player works towards executing an opponent in a certain way, they have a higher chance of loot. An example would be decapitating an enemy to increase the chances obtaining their helmet. However, The Surge is still showing alpha gameplay so we are not expected to see the souls' esque game until next year. Definitely one to watch for Dark Souls fans.
