The XBLG Game of the Year for 2016 was not an easy one to pick, we found there was a vast number of titles we enjoyed playing last year. Computer games are probably the youngest entertainment medium, where films have had decades to perfect their craft and books are timeless classics; computer games are infants in comparison. This means that that games themselves suffer a great deal of criticism and mockery because the medium is still seen as a niche by many people.
I will happily tell those people that computer games are possibly the most dramatic and interactive way of telling a story that you could ever imagine. I will take last years Goliath of a title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as my shining example, the telling of author Andrzej Sapkowski tale about a monster hunter named Geralt of Rivia. This is much more than hunting down monsters and demons, the tale stretches from monarchies to all out warfare without ever compromising on detail. It would be a long article if I were to ramble on about how this game surpasses the expectations of gaming and stands itself as a expertly told story. Instead I will let you see the trailer which showcases enough elements of the game without ever giving everything away.
It has been an incredible 12 months for gaming; the world has been spoiled with some of the biggest studios in the world pulling out all the stops to bring us all something special.
Now unfortunately as the same as in "Highlander" there can be only one, this year we wanted to awards Game of the Year to something truly special. This game made a huge impact to gaming with outstanding graphics, an intricate and detailed story that has barely been equalled and an open world so huge you could be daunted and lost in the map for days.
The biggest winner of the event appeared to be developer CD Projekt RED with their juggernaut title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the developer and game went up against titles such as Bloodborne, Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Super Mario Maker to come out on top as Game Of The Year. CD Projekt Red walked away with Developer Of The Year as well beating studios such as FROM Software, Kojima Productions, Nintendo and Bethesda Game Studios.
