In a recent interview with VideoGamer.com, Final Fantasy Series Producer Yoshinori Kitase implied that the development of Final Fantasy XV (Originally titled Final Fantasy Versus XIII) is quite advanced and that Square-Enix has given the game priority over other titles.
When asked about the progress of FFXV and Kingdom Hearts 3 Kitase commented:
"We can't give too much information but certainly looking at Final Fantasy XV, it's not as if it's in competition with Kingdom Hearts 3 for resources or anything like that...It's quite far into development now and it is being given a very high priority within the company itself, but that doesn't mean Kingdom Hearts isn't."
Both titles have been in the pipeline for years with gamers growing ever more impatient, especially with FFXV and I should know, I'm one of them. Versus XIII was announced back in 2006 and I was always looking forward to the darker and grittier version over Lightning and co.
The darkest Final Fantasy since FFVII? I certainly hope so.
Now we are approaching almost a decade of development hell but I am still hyped for this game because I feel it can bring back the spark that has been missing since FFX. FFXV's combat system reminds me somewhat of the last great Final Fantasy title I played, Crisis Core. I can only imagine the gameplay mechanics that will be on show with the latest hardware, something Kitase also alluded to:
"We are quite aware of [the new consoles'] capabilities and certainly one thing that's going to come up is having battles with a lot more participants involved...Having a lot more characters, a lot more things happening, that's one of the things that the new hardware does really well, so to maybe make a battle system for a Final Fantasy game or a future game that fits with that, I think it would be quite good to have more characters for the player to control and more participants in the battle."
Ramping up the scale of battles on the latest hardware.
There is no concrete time frame for the release of FFXV although an educated guess would be sometime in early 2015. However, do not expect Kingdom Hearts 3 any time soon since the Project Lead for both titles is Tetsuya Nomura and can only work on one game at a time.
