Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 brings a sizeable roster of the most recognisable characters from both iconic franchises into a 3 vs 3 battle to save the universe from the hunger of Galactus!
Before I go into the nitty gritty of this review I will say I am a massive fan of both Marvel and Capcom. The series of Vs titles released by Capcom over the years has been relatively very good, it has been built on the stable and reliable rules of Capcom's own Street fighter brand of beat em up.
Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 has a huge range of fighters to choose from when creating your team of galaxy saviours (or destroyers), these characters vary from the likes of Captain America to Ryu and then to the obscure which includes Phoenix Wright to Dormammu.
Each character has a set of three unique skills that you can utilise during battles, however you are only able to select one. When combined into the same type these special moves can be quite devastating when the opponent has been caught off guard. For example during one of my matches I was caught in an attack by Iron Man, Nemesis and a Sentinel which hit me over 100 times! This resulted in my character, which just happened to be Wolverine, getting at least half of his health wiped out.The game features the traditional Arcade modes as well as online/offline multiplayer.
My experiences with the multiplayer where pretty dire, I count myself as quite a decent Street fighter player but found I was getting destroyed in this game by a vastly superior player Base who know what characters exactly complement each other. This may put the average gamer off but please don't the Arcade mode as well as couch versus is still amazing and if your a beat em up fan like myself then you will lap it up.
In game graphics are fantastic and each character is unique in design and moves that are available. Each character also has at least six different outfits which resemble different designs of the character and in some of the Marvel character you end up being a different character all together.
Stage design is pretty basic but these capture what exactly your fighting for and just how grand the overall cross over is. For example one stage you will be fighting in a destroyed lab from Resident Evil and the next your on top of a Helicarrier.
The only complaint I have is with Galactus himself. Yes I know in lore he is the destroyer of world's and should be powerful but he is very overpowered and does not need the two stages that the final fight has. What I mean by this is the first round consists of your team vs one of Galactus' Heralds which is one character in silver skin. Once you have bested this you then fight the big guy, no health or character recovery. A few times I was wiped by Galactus before I had managed to hit him!
Each character has their own ending in arcade so there is plenty of replay-ability to unlock all of these. There is also an art work section that features a lot of concept art ranging from characters to a full comic book that serves as an intro to the games events.
In closing Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 is well worth the £19.99 price tag and has many features that both Marvel and Capcom fans will lap up. Whilst multiplayer is in my opinion is a drawback this is far succeeded by what's on offer of the Arcade mode and the endless possibilities of braking writes between friends. Who doesn't want to beat a friend up as Frank West dressed up as Mega Man?
