Halo 5 Guardians – Master Chief Takes A Backseat?!

I know. Shocking! This is the latest rumour to bring Halo fanboys around the world to their knees (me included). A Halo (numbered!) game not to feature Master Chief as the main character. “Surely it should be a side story game like Reach or ODST”, I hear you cry. Well, all is not lost: 343 have confirmed John 117 will be a playable character, but it would seem the story is to focus on tracking down the AWOL Spartan.

The rumour has come from Mike Colter, who is to play Agent Jameson Locke in the live action series Halo: Nightfall and Halo 5 Guardians.

Mike Colter as Agent Locke in Halo: Nightfall.

During an interview with X-One magazine, he was asked if Agent Locke would heavily feature in Guardians, and he had this to say:

“Yeah I’m a playable character in Halo 5. Once Halo: The Master Chief Collection is released, and then Halo 5 comes out shortly thereafter, you’re basically going to be playing a game with me as the primary character. I’ll have some cool weaponry and some cool abilities, because by that time I’ll be a Spartan IV”.

For all those following the story (minor spoilers to follow) Jameson Locke is an agent of ONI (the MI6/CIA of the UNSC world), so it will be interesting to see his transition to a Spartan IV.

While it is a statement that is not confirmed by 343 and it does not detail for how much of the game you will be in control of the new character Locke, Mike Colter did go on to provide some teasing questions for the story.

“What’s not known, is whether I’m a friend or foe. The relationship between Master Chief and Jameson Locke is going to be interesting. Because what’s the outcome? Is he dead or alive? Because that’s usually what a manhunt comes down to, dead or alive, but you won’t know what the purpose of finding Master Chief is [right away]. Or what will happen if we do find him, what condition he will be in, and where he’s at mentally. But I’m sure that’ll be a plot twist in Halo 5.”

So there you have it, from the actor’s mouth itself. It will be interesting to see what snippets of information 343 disclose from now until its release day.
