The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is the latest game to come from Supermassive Games, this is their latest product into the gaming world. The Anthology will be a series of different games based around urban myths unique to specific places throughout the world. The first of these games will be the nautical themed Man of Medan.
I had the pleasure of playing a demo of this upcoming title at EGX, the game had very much piqued my interest since it was announced at Gamescom not too long ago. This will be the first time Supermassive Games bring a title to the Xbox One, all I can say is I have been looking forward to this since announcement.
The Man of Medan starts off creepy as hell, a ship is floating in a stormy ocean with a cryptic voice coming over the radio. The mood is set straight away while players quickly realise this may not be all sunshine and rainbows. A re-cap of the story is delivered quickly before placing the player into the story, there was not actual way of knowing how far into the story this demo took place. When I finally took control of the character I was being led through an old abandoned ship with some strange being stalking us while never showing face.
The graphics in the demo were outstanding, with character detail and design at a standard that the studio are well known for. The use of perspective and camera focus was brilliant as well, where dog tags picked up would automatically be follow by the focus shifting to a skeleton close to the screen.
Man of Medan is setting up to be a brilliant narrative horror adventure, the Dark Pictures is going to be kicking off to a good start with this at its lead. The game played extremely well, though I imagine some of the atmosphere was lost with the noise from the show floor drowning out the game audio.
I look forward to hearing more about this title and all future releases from the Dark Picture.
